ECC vs Non-ECC Memory: Does a Home Server Need It?
ECC memory detects and corrects single-bit errors that would otherwise corrupt data silently, which matters most on a machine that stores everything you own and runs for years. It costs more and requires a platform that supports it. Use ECC if the machine is your primary storage, especially with ZFS; non-ECC is acceptable for a media box that holds nothing irreplaceable.

Is ECC required for ZFS?
Not required, and ZFS works without it. The argument is that ZFS's checksums protect data on disk but cannot protect data that was already corrupted in memory before being written. ECC closes that gap, which is why it is so strongly recommended for pools holding irreplaceable data.
How do I know if my platform supports ECC?
The CPU, chipset and motherboard all have to support it, and the requirements differ between AMD and Intel platforms and between generations. Check all three against the specific memory type before buying anything.
Does ECC make the system slower?
Marginally, and not in a way you would notice on a file server. The trade is cost and platform choice rather than performance.
