How to read these guides
Start with the drives, not the box. Almost every buying guide in this category has the priority backwards. An eight-bay enclosure is roughly $1,300 and the eight drives that fill it are $2,000 to $4,000, so the drives are two thirds to four fifths of the purchase. Drives also fail and get upgraded on a rolling schedule, which the enclosure does not. Spending three weeks choosing between two boxes that differ by $80, then buying whatever drives are cheapest, is the most common expensive mistake in home storage.
Each guide presents picks in three tiers. Beginner is the honest entry point: hardware that works correctly and will not need replacing in a year. Intermediate is where most readers should land. Expert covers the top of the category, and every guide states who should not buy it. On this site that answer is usually the same: the money would do more for you in drives than in a faster enclosure, because capacity and redundancy are what you will actually run out of.
We do not test hardware in person and we will not pretend otherwise. What we do is compare published manufacturer specifications, cross-check them against verified owner reviews, and flag where a spec sheet is quietly measuring something different from a competitor's. Where a product is not sold on Amazon, we link to a search rather than invent a listing.
Two technical filters do more work than everything else in this category. The first is CMR against SMR: shingled drives rewrite overlapping tracks and can take days rather than hours to rebuild an array, so they do not belong in RAID at any price. The second is a published workload rating in terabytes per year, which is the manufacturer telling you whether a drive was designed to run continuously. Both are covered in how to choose NAS drives.
Pair these guides with the numbers. The RAID capacity calculator tells you how many drives you need before you choose which ones, the NAS model pages give published specifications with usable capacity computed for every layout, and the reference charts hold the spec tables.
