The reason to insist on pure sine wave is that many modern power supplies use active power factor correction, and some of those refuse to run cleanly on the stepped approximation cheap UPS units produce.

What it does well
- Pure sine wave output is the specification that matters and the one cheap UPS units omit. Power supplies with active power factor correction can behave badly on a stepped approximation, which turns the UPS into the cause of the outage.
- Automatic voltage regulation handles brownouts and over-voltage without draining the battery, and chronic voltage problems damage equipment slowly in ways that are hard to attribute.
- The LCD showing live watt draw is genuinely useful beyond the UPS itself. It tells you what your server actually consumes, which is the input to any power cost calculation.
- Six battery-backed outlets and four surge-only is the right split, so the printer does not eat your runtime.
- Ethernet and coax surge protection covers the paths that lightning-induced surges actually take into home equipment.
Where it falls short
- Nine hundred watts is the real limit, not 1500VA. Those are different units and the watt figure is the one your equipment consumes. A NAS with eight drives spinning up plus a switch and a mini PC can approach it.
- The 73 minute runtime figure is at a 100W load. At 300W it will be far shorter, and runtime falls faster than linearly as load rises. Use the runtime calculator with your real draw.
- Batteries are consumable. Expect to replace them every few years, and a UPS with a dead battery is a surge strip with a warning light.
- Line-interactive units switch to battery with a brief transfer time. That is fine for modern power supplies and it is not the seamless double-conversion behaviour a data centre unit provides.
- It needs to talk to the server to be useful. A UPS that keeps a NAS alive for an hour but never tells it to shut down has not solved the problem.

How do I size a UPS?
