- Enterprise ratings at a consumer price. A 2.5 million hour MTBF and a five-year warranty are the same figures the top consumer NAS drives carry, often for less money per terabyte.
- Data centre drives are built for continuous heavy workloads, which is exactly what a NAS array with regular scrubs and rebuilds subjects them to.
- Twenty terabytes per bay is close to the practical top of the market, so a four-bay unit holds a great deal without eight drives spinning.
- Enhanced caching gives consistent response times under load, which shows up in a busy array rather than in a single file copy.
- Enterprise drives are sold in volume and their failure characteristics are unusually well documented in published drive statistics.
Where it falls short
- Noise. Exos drives are designed for a data hall and they are noticeably louder than consumer NAS drives, both in idle hum and in seek chatter. In a room where people sit, four of these is not subtle.
- Power draw is higher than a consumer NAS drive, and across four bays running continuously that becomes a line on your electricity bill.
- Enterprise drives run warm and expect the airflow a rack provides. A small desktop NAS chassis with poor ventilation is not their intended environment.
- Rebuild time on a 20TB drive is many hours and often more than a day, which is an argument for double parity rather than single.
- Firmware and features are tuned for arrays and controllers rather than for consumer NAS units, and occasional compatibility quirks get reported.
What owners report
Enterprise drives in home NAS units are common enough that the pattern is well established: they are reliable, cheaper per terabyte and louder than the drives sold for the purpose. Owner reports repeat exactly that. The people who regret buying them are the ones who put the NAS in a bedroom or a living room.

Is a 2.5 million hour MTBF meaningful?
It is a population statistic, not a promise about your drive. It means that across a large fleet under specified conditions, failures occur at a certain rate. It tells you nothing about which of your four drives fails first. Plan for failure with redundancy and a real backup, not with a specification sheet.
Should I burn in a new drive before using it?
