What it does well
- Sixteen threads of current-generation Ryzen is more CPU than any consumer NAS offers, and it is the reason to build a server on a mini PC rather than an appliance.
- Two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots with RAID 0 and RAID 1 support means you can mirror the boot and application storage, which most mini PCs cannot.
- USB4 at 40 gigabit makes external storage genuinely fast, so a DAS enclosure attached here is not the bottleneck it would be over USB 3.
- The Radeon 780M handles hardware transcoding well, which covers most of what a home media server asks of a GPU.
- Idle power on a mobile-class Ryzen is far below a desktop build, and a home server runs continuously.
Where it falls short
- There are no drive bays. Bulk storage means an external enclosure, and that adds a box, a power supply and a cable that can be knocked out.
- Two NVMe slots is not a storage strategy for a media library. It is a storage strategy for an operating system, containers and a cache.
- Mini PC cooling is compact by definition. Under sustained full load these run warm and the fan is audible, which is a different profile from a NAS that idles most of the time.
- You are assembling the server yourself. There is no DSM, no built-in backup application and no web interface until you install one.
- Wi-Fi 6E is not how a server should be connected. Check the wired networking speed on the specific configuration you buy and plan on using it.
