What it does well

  • Two 10GbE ports as standard, where most competitors charge for an add-in card or ship 2.5GbE. If you have 10GbE at the other end, this is the difference between a NAS that feels local and one that does not.
  • A 12th generation Core i5 with ten cores is a serious processor for a NAS, and it will hardware transcode and run virtual machines without complaint.
  • Eight SATA bays plus two NVMe slots means you can run bulk storage and a fast cache or app pool in the same box.
  • UGREEN state third-party drive compatibility explicitly, which is worth noting given how the market has moved on that question.

Where it falls short

  • The software is young. UGREEN entered the NAS market recently, and a NAS operating system is judged over years of updates rather than at launch. Synology's DSM and QNAP's QTS have a decade of hard problems solved in them.
  • Fewer community answers. When something unusual breaks at 11pm, the size of the user base is what determines whether the answer already exists.
  • Ten gigabit ethernet is only useful if the whole path supports it. Your switch, your cable and the client all have to keep up, and a single spinning drive cannot saturate even 2.5GbE.
  • Eight spinning drives is a meaningful amount of heat, noise and power. This is not a living room device.
  • The 272TB maximum assumes drive capacities that cost more than the NAS several times over. Treat it as a ceiling, not a plan.

Owner reports on UGREEN's NASync line are consistently impressed by the hardware and measured about the software. Do I need 10GbE for a home NAS?
