10GbE vs 2.5GbE: Which Network Speed Do You Need?
2.5GbE is cheap, runs on existing Cat5e in most homes, and is roughly two and a half times gigabit, which is more than a few spinning drives can saturate anyway. 10GbE is four times faster again but costs more in cards, switches and often cabling, and needs storage fast enough to feed it. Choose 2.5GbE for most home servers; choose 10GbE if you move very large files and have SSD or a wide array behind it.

Will my drives actually saturate 10GbE?
A single spinning drive will not come close. Several in an array can approach it, and SSDs will exceed it. Work out the array's real throughput before buying the network gear, or you are upgrading the wrong component.
Do I need new cabling?
For 2.5GbE, usually not. For 10GbE over any distance, Cat6a is the sensible standard. Short runs often work on Cat5e but it is not something to design around.
Is the switch the hidden cost?
Usually, yes. Network cards are cheap and multi-gig switches are where the money goes, particularly if you want more than a couple of fast ports.
