- CMR, which is the specification that matters most and the one WD's own naming has historically made confusing. Red Plus is CMR; the plain Red line included SMR drives.
- NASware firmware handles the error recovery and vibration behaviour a multi-bay array needs, which desktop drives do not.
- One hundred and eighty terabytes a year is far more than a home NAS writes, so the lower workload rating relative to Red Pro is rarely a real constraint at home.
- Twelve terabytes is a sweet spot on price per terabyte, and the rebuild window is meaningfully shorter than a 20 or 24TB drive.

Is 180TB per year enough?
For a home NAS, comfortably. That figure represents the amount of data transferred to and from the drive across a year, and a typical household NAS is nowhere near it. Continuous multi-camera surveillance recording or a NAS under constant heavy write load are the cases where you want the higher rating.
Is a NAS drive worth it over a desktop drive?
Yes, for two specific reasons: error recovery behaviour that works with a RAID controller rather than against it, and firmware and mechanics designed for a chassis full of vibrating neighbours. A desktop drive in a NAS often works until the day it is dropped from the array during a rebuild.
Can I shuck drives from an external enclosure instead?
Sometimes, and it is cheaper. The catches are that you cannot always tell which drive you will get, the warranty situation changes, and some shucked drives have a 3.3V pin behaviour that stops them spinning up in certain backplanes. Our shucking guide covers all three.
