Up to 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write over PCIe 4.0, with better power efficiency than the 980 PRO it replaced. Buy it as the boot and application drive in a mini PC server, or as NVMe cache in a NAS that has the slots. Do not buy it expecting network transfers to get faster, because even 10 gigabit ethernet moves about a sixth of what this drive can deliver.

What it does well
- Random performance is what actually matters in a server, and Samsung's stated 55 percent improvement over the 980 PRO is in exactly the metric that makes databases, container starts and virtual machines feel quick.
- Power efficiency matters on a machine running continuously, and a drive that does the same work for less heat runs cooler in a cramped mini PC chassis.
- It saturates PCIe 4.0, so there is nothing left to gain without moving to PCIe 5.0 and a board that supports it.
- Two terabytes is the right size for a server boot drive plus containers, application data and a database, without paying for capacity that sits empty.
- Samsung's field record on the PRO line is long and unusually consistent.
Where it falls short
- In a NAS, the network is the ceiling. Even 10 gigabit ethernet carries around 1,250 MB/s at best, which is about a sixth of what this drive delivers. Almost all of that speed is invisible over a share.
- It runs hot under sustained load and it needs a heat sink or good airflow. Many mini PCs and NAS M.2 slots have neither, and a throttled drive is a slow drive.
- This is a consumer drive without power-loss protection capacitors. For a write cache in front of a critical array, an enterprise drive is the correct part.
- Four hundred dollars for 2TB is roughly ten times the cost per terabyte of a NAS hard drive, so it is not a storage strategy, it is an acceleration strategy.
- SSD write endurance is finite, and a drive used as a write cache in front of a busy array works far harder than one used as a boot drive.
What owners report
The 990 PRO is one of the best documented consumer NVMe drives available and owner reports are consistent on performance and on thermals. The recurring practical note is heat: in a laptop or a tight mini PC without a heat sink, sustained writes will throttle it. That is a mounting problem rather than a drive problem, and it is easily solved.

Does a 990 PRO need a heat sink?
In a tight chassis with no airflow, yes. Sustained writes generate heat and a hot NVMe drive throttles its own performance to protect itself. Many mini PCs and NAS M.2 slots provide neither a heat sink nor airflow, so adding one is worth doing if the slot allows the clearance.
990 PRO or 990 EVO Plus?
The PRO is faster in sustained and random workloads. The EVO Plus reaches up to 7,250 MB/s for less money and is more than enough for a server boot drive, container storage and general application data. For most home servers the EVO Plus is the sensible buy.
Can I use it as a NAS write cache?
You can, and it will work. Consumer drives do not have the power-loss protection capacitors that enterprise SSDs use, which means an outage during a cache write carries more risk. If the array holds data you cannot lose, use an enterprise drive with power-loss protection for cache duty and put this one somewhere less critical.
How much NVMe do I need in a home server?
One or two terabytes covers an operating system, container images, virtual machine disks and application data for most builds. Anything larger is usually better served by spinning storage at a tenth the cost per terabyte. Buy NVMe for what needs to be fast, not for what needs to be big.
