They are designed for continuous operation, vibration from neighbouring drives and RAID error recovery timing, which matters in a multi-bay enclosure. Desktop drives often work but are a false economy in an always-on array.
What is drive shucking?
Removing a drive from an external enclosure, which is often cheaper than buying the bare drive. It can void the warranty and the drive inside is not always what you expected, so treat the saving as coming with real risk.
Will an SSD cache speed up my NAS?
For repeated access to the same files, yes. For streaming large media once, no, because the bottleneck is the network rather than the disk. Match the cache to the workload before spending on it.
